Depends on the age. Try getting idea from websites and look them up by age.

Bibs and hats are the worst gifts ever… at least to me. They don’t wear the hats but 2 weeks.. most of us give up after 3 days because they just don’t stay on. Socks are good, those really soft ones were my favorite to put on him. Polyester blankets are TERRIBLE… they make the baby sweat. Don’t bother with the dollar store for gifts. So far the only things that aren’t total junk that I’ve gotten there are the little bags for tossing pooped diapers, and sippy cups they’ll use as a toddler (long ways off). The onsies get all distorted, the socks fall apart, the polyester blankets are too small for the baby anyways and they make them sweat. Get at least 50% cotton for blankets and outfits.

    My favorite gifts were:

Chewy photo book About $7 from Toys R Us or Babies R Us.. the 4"x6" photos go into a plastic sleeve so the baby can see in and chew on it and not ruin the photos. Of course they don’t really look at the pictures themselves for awhile… but it’ a really great gift because their mom or dad will show the baby the pictures of grandparents that can’t be there, etc.

It’s a bad time of year for getting things thru the mail but you can check Ebay (if you have enough time.. if the gift is for a baby shower) for brand new lots of outfits. I really liked my Snugli brand baby carrier… but I think those are around $40 new.. might find one NWT on Ebay for cheaper.. an extra someone got or something.

For something unique.. go on Ebay and look for a new hand-made quilt for baby… they seem to go for less than the cost of materials for them (I’m a quilter myself). There are SOO many cute ones.. they’ll think you made it and they don’t have to be told otherwise! :)

It would be a lot easier to answer your question if you put the age but:

My best bet would be a cardboard book. Something with abc’s or animals is a good bet. The really little ones like being shown the pages, as they get to about 6 months they’ll start to turn the pages themselves, and by about 1 year old they can identify things on the pages when the parents ask "where’s the cow?" or something like that.

If you don’t like books I would go for:

0-3 months a set of foot or wrist finders - these are rattles that attach to the baby’s ankles or wrists

3-6 months I’d go for some balls or teething rings

6-9 months stacking rings or shape sorters (those balls that you can insert shapes into)

9-12 months something that moves because they’re more mobile, maybe a train or car etc. Toys with a draw string.

Anyway, I’m creating a site just for this type of thing, if you’d like to look at the toys pages check it out at
