I’m thinking of starting up a business making baby bibs. I’d like to know what parents look for in bibs.

I’m wanting to design and manufacture baby bibs that are cool, funky and functional. Easy to puto n / take off and easy to clean. I want to know what people value in baby bibs so that I can meet their needs. Also, if you know who I can contact to source material to ensure these are Australian made.

Be sure to check codes in Australia for the manufacture of children’s clothing. For instance, in the US, there is a maximum length of the strings/ties that you can use. Velcro isn’t a problem. Certain materials may not be useable.

I hated the plastic coated ones. The food would just slide off and into the kid’s lap, thereby giving some really interesting stains to the pants.

I look for the right size…I have a 18 month old…so I like the ling ones…also they have to wash well and be very absorbent.

i love the ones that are made of terry cloth because its more useful wiping their faces afterwards! i hate the ones with the plastic coating… they made a bigger mess…the new ones that are cute have a little pocket type at the bottom to catch food that drops, those are nice… dont use tie backs, use velcro!! that was the best invention ever!!!

A fabric that is easy to clean, like in the sink, but still available to through in washer. Pockets are nice for oldre babies, but unnecessary for newborns. Different sizes to go with a growing baby. velcroe is nice, but sometimes gets fuzzies in it which makes it harder to close, try snaps, buttons

they have to look cute. plain colors. make sure they absorb well because like my friend said up there, the plastic ones are no good when u want to keep baby clean. no one-size-fits-all…make different sizes! a good idea would be to have plastic on the inside so baby wont dirty clothes but aborbant cloth on the outside to catch all the mess

All that people have commented above are true but I wanted to add one more thing… they cant leak through the back. The whole point of a bib is to keep the baby’s shirt clean so if it leaks to the back and wets the shirt, it is pointless.

For me, I would definitely look for ones that don’t have to go completely over the baby’s head - I think ones that fasten in the back (prefer Velcro) are better. Also, just make sure it is something that can be thrown in the washing machine with everything else, and is fairly stain-resistant.
Not sure who to go to about sourcing Aus made fabric - maybe start with someone like Cotton Australia who represent the Australian Cotton Industry and see if they can suggest a manufacturer or supplier for you?
Good luck with your venture - a great idea to keep them all Aussie made!

i always use the tie up 1s because i can tie them at the SIDE! if they made Velcro 1s that fasten at the side this would be great! i don’t know if every1 feels the same though?
non-colorfast is good - and the 1s with plastic backing cant go in the tumble dryer - so no good!
the terry 1s i find better
they can’t be too ‘fun’ as my little1 has started playing with her bib instead of eating!
it would be nice however to get some bibs that match most of baby’s clothes ie. pink, white, blue, beige(instead of the horrible orange and yellow 1s i see everywhere!)
Good Luck in your new business hope everything goes well for you!

there is a woman who makes bibs at donigton market. she asks you what you want on it and she will even post it to you. i have a 2 year old and a baby on the way so i got a bib for the baby that says ‘i love my brother’. she charges £2.50 for them and i think they are great!
just put allsorts on them like i love mummy/daddy/grandad etc or things like. mines a pint and put a bottle of milk on it. or i am the little/big brother/sister. things like that are really cool. you could make t-shirts too. good luck. its a good idea

soft enough to wipe the baby’s face with it but not velvet-dont like those..terry cloth and cotton is nice. a good color that wont get faded when u wash it or is stain resistant so the bib still looks cute, i like the snap ones because the velcro gets fuzzies stuck to it and it looks trashy. i like the ones with the clever sayings on them or pictures. the longer bibs are nice so that if the baby tries to touch their shirt it will get more on the bib than the outfit. also the top of the bib sometimes gets food caught underneath it- if u could improve that it would be kewl. thats all i can thing of right now tho- hope it helps!
