got you through the first year or are getting you through the first year. It’s been almost ten years since my last baby and gave all of my stuff away. I know newer items (or improved) are available from ten years ago but I’m not sure what to shop for.
Things I know I’ll want are a sling or carrier (not sure of the best brand), stroller and car seat (not sure of combo or separate items), nursing accessories (cape, pillow good support bra). What do you recomend and why?
A Lot of C & D batteries!
What are your favorite baby items that?

My swing was my lifesaver! He absolutely loved it. He would not nap in his crib so everyday he took his naps in there. Things to look for, make sure buy if you buy one, one that is electric, and has some sort of soothing music. We have the Fisher Price Rainforest full size one. The travel one was recalled a while back. Also, go with the combo stoller/carseat. I didn’t and wished I had. For one, they match! Also you know the carseat will fit properly on the stroller. I tried the carrier and it hurt my back too much, I have scolosis, so I think that may be why.
Just have fun! And best wishes.

Those vibrating bouncers are really cool. The swings are great now, too.

Deffenitley get some nursing pads to help with leakage as it sounds like you are going to breastfeed. I loved the aloft. Also, i would’ve died without a bottle brush that comes with a little part to get into the nooks and crannies of the bottle’s. Remember to buy some baby soap for the washer. Their skin is very sensitive to regular soap.

Gro-bags are really useful, especially when the baby is in a cot. You don’t have to worry about him/her getting too hot / too cold / kicking covers off etc.
Also, a Widgey Pillow to help with feeding and can later be used to help the baby sit up.
If you plan on breast-feeding an electric breast pump is great for expressing in preparation for being away from the baby or just giving yourself a break now and then.

A sling is the best! I loved my fleece pouch for our fall baby, but a Moby wrap style is also very cozy. Don’t really like a ring sling for a newborn though, but great for a little later (4 months). I didn’t bother with a stroller combo–I NEVER carried the carseat (always used the sling), and we hardly use the stroller either, LOL. Having to have the stroller in the car/truck all the time would have been a BIG nuisance–no room for the groceries or the dog
There is a really cute hat for the nursing baby, has a huge brim, and the "Hooter Hiders" nursing cape is neat, if you really feel the need to spend the $$ instead of a light blanket. I loved my Avent Isis breast pump and the Breast Friend nursing pillow.
And those are really all the ‘big’ items you ‘need’. Co-sleeping (if you are in the ’safe’ list of people/beds) is easiest/safest, breastmilk is easier/better than formula, and a sling beats a stroller hands down. But you do need a good carseat; take a look at Britax, it’s best to keep baby rear-facing to about 30lbs.
And get Dr Harvey Karp’s "The Happiest Baby on the Block"!!!

deff a boppy pillow…that was my fav thing when i was nursing, a vibrating rocking chair was one of my sons favorite things untill he was like 6 months old. i have the whinnie the pooh stroller and a graco carseat and they look into each other. i wanted the combo but didnt get it. now that my son is older his favorite things are a stationary jumper mad my fisher price(he doesnt like the johnny jump up) also likes anything that is leap frog, the play table, walker, saucer. and deff. deff. deff. baby einstein dvd’s. my son started watching them around 6 months and that gives me 30mins of quiet time. ive been told that dr. browns bottles are to die for, unfortuanatly i never bought them and right now dont have the money to…i used the nursing bras from walmart, very comfy and supportive.

My oldest 2 are 15 and 13 and my youngest is now just 6. The difference in what’s in the market to buy when I had him was mind boggling. But I did find some great things. Firstly get a nasal aspirator. It’s like a tube you put in baby’s nostril when they’re all bunged up with a cold/flu, it has a bulb on the end you squeeze and it sucks all the crap out. disgusting I know, but a god send. That thing gave me some better nights sleep than I would’ve had. A bottle warmer you plug in, so you have an already warm bottle in the middle of the night, instead of running downstairs, heating one up, with a screaming baby, trying not to wake everyone up. I breastfed my son, but this next idea could be used for bottle fed too. You can buy a rest for your arm to feed the baby but its like a sausage shape. I got a padded animal shape pillow. It’s long enough to place baby on(I actually recently bought one for my sister from a pets section in the shape of a paw), You can still cuddle baby, give your arm a rest, and when they fall asleep you jkust pick up the pillow and put itdown without waking baby.
Oh and pads for your bed. You can buy maternity pads to place under your side of the bed incase you bleed in the night, but they cost alot for only a few. They sell a packet of puppy pads in the pet section, which are exactly the same thing, butmuch much cheaper and more to the packet.

I couldnt have lived without
~carter onesies
~Snugli front carrier
~eddie bauer stroller/carseat combo
~Sears carried a pillow that laid in the carseat cream infantino
~drop in bottles(after six months of breastfeeding)with the old latex square tip nipples.
~i used very light receiving blankets when I nursed so I could wash them easily. I bought one with a weight to go over my back and didn’t like it!
~I loved the bestform cotton white nursing bras from walmart (cheap)
~I used my kitchen sink for her bath with one of those netted frame bouncy things.
I have 3 girls and do not work so I try to save $ wherever I can. I found that I didn’t really need much for a newborn other than some carter sleepers and onesie and LOTS of LOVE
Good Luck to you!

Bouncers! I had twins, and as infants, when I was alone, they lived in those things. When you’re tired you can just plop them there and bounce it with your foot. Of course they have the kind that bounce themselves, but you don’t have to worry about batteries with the old school one! Plus they’re only about $20.
As far as a stroller, I went through about 8, and if I had to do it over again, here’s what I’d do. Get the kind that your car seat snaps into. Most definitely. Now there’s a couple kinds like that, depending on what you want to end up with. Once your child is older, I’d HIGHLY recommend a jogging stroller with a swiveling front wheel. They are soooo easy to maneuver and even if your child gets heavy, they’re easy to push because they have large bicycle wheels. The swiveling front wheel is key though. Now, back to the baby carrier one, since if I were you, I’d want to invest in the jogging stroller instead of a plush regular stroller that is clunky and will likely not fit in your trunk if anything else is in there, soooo… they have these skeleton type strollers that alone do nothing, but snap onto your carrier. They’re not expensive and are super portable/collapsible.
For a sling, make sure that it’s cotton, because having that against your chest makes for some heat. I liked the kind that held them on your hip, but I’m not sure how that works with an infant. I rarely used my sling, but I had twins and that made it hard.
Congrats on nursing. Get a boppy, they’re awesome. For a cape, I used one of those shawl sweater things that were in style about 3 years ago, it worked awesome.
Car seat- go to babiesrus and try out the carriers. I liked the one with a handle that allowed me to hold my arm naturally without twisting my wrist. Also one that isn’t extremely difficult to remove from the base is always a plus. They’ll only be in this carseat for about 6 months, so don’t spend too much, save it for the next seat.
Good luck!

Baby Bjorn for a sling, look on ebay for a cheaper one. The lack of back ache is well worth the money.
I never use my boppy pillow, ever for anything.
Get a swing that goes side to side. you can get the small ones at Target, if you are on a budget. i got i think a graco one, ( the bigger one) it was and is my third arm.
also you must at least check out high chairs that have options.
these are a must.
one hand release
wipeable cover
reclinable for infants
and removable inner tray.
umm if i think of anthing later ill add on.

If you are going to have the baby in the winter time you r gonna needa cover for your carseat! It’s the best you don’t haveto go out and get baby coats! Mine is called cozy cover at walmart for like around $10 or you can go for more pricey at babies r us they call it bundle me for $40. The carseat and stoller cobo we have is the "graco snug ride" its the best selling one don’t forget to get an extra base me and my bf fight over who’s car it needs to be in on a weekly basis!
http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2400875
we use a play pen as a bassinett you can buy ones that have all types of additions like built in changing table ect this was a gift it works great for us
http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2583975
They have disposable changing pads for when you go out and the nasty changing tables don’t have the covers(every public bathroom i’ve ever been in never has any!!!)
The diaper bags are soo much more fashonable too! If you reg online most stores will give youa great start up list.
good luck and congradulations!

When I was expecting my first, I went *Crazy-Happy* with an 8 page list on all of the things I was convinced I absolutely NEEDED to get me through the first year. Oddly, I don’t need/use more than 75% of that junk. My favorites and ESSENTIALS (that I’ll now keep on a list for myself for baby#2) are:
Baby Sling/Carrier:
The Native Baby Carrier — It’s a sling style, and I absolutely love it. When my young one was just an itty bitty boy, I could do anything with him snuggled in this carrier; although, I have yet to master nursing in the darned thing. It IS possible, though. When my son is in his big-bulk snow-suit, I can wear the native carrier as a hip hugger and it couples over his tooshy marvelously — I still keep my arm on him, though.
For my 5"8 and medium/large build, I wear a size medium.
The main thing I LOVE about this carrier — is it looks flattering on me. It doesn’t squeeze like a lot of other baby carriers. My sweety has a hard time functioning this baby carrrier — for some reason he can’t place baby correctly to where he looks comfortable. …. I’m not so sure about that one… haha
Mei Tei- I have one of these and as much as I LOVED how I could easily look down and see my little joy-boy, it squeezed all of my -squishies- and I did not like it whatsoever. Now that I’m 5 months postpartum and only 10 lbs away from prepregnancy weight, I enjoy this one a lot better– but it does squeeze and requires so much tieing - wrapping - retightening. My everso fit sweetheart really loves this carrier — if I tie it for him.
Car Seat
We were SET on getting a Britax convertible car seat that will last our baby through 65 pounds! Amazing! They’re VERY pricey, though– ~$300, but the safety ratings are top notch WORLD WIDE! We haven’t invested in one yet because we received an Evenflo Latch-System car seat at our baby shower. As nervous as I was about Evenflo’s safety ratings and re-call rates, it’s a great car seat. You strap in your base and can click the seat itself in and out as will. Very nifty!
Keep in mind when it comes to carseats if you add the extra infant-pillows/"bundle-me" covers that are not included from the manufacturer when you buy it — they are then considered "TAMPERED" and the manufacturer will no longer verify the car seats safety. Just a note!
Stroller: I don’t see why people spend so much money on those strange four plastic wheel strollers. We spent $100 [regularly $130] on the Jeep Liberty Ultra Terrain Jogger. The wheels are inflatable which makes it easier to get around bumpy sidewalks. The back is adjustable so you can make it easy for baby to sleep in when he/she’s so young. 5-point-harness system… the best! Weather/shade that adjustable. Cup holders…under-basket,… toy for baby when he’s able to reach it [it's a steering wheel. how cute!]
OH! I LOVE THIS THING! haha. It looks like it’ll work until our baby boy is AT LEAST 4 years old. And it folds up.
I highly recommend joggers.
Nursing Accessories —
Bras: Ha. I’m VERY happy I didn’t invest too much in nursing wear - especially with their prices! Ouch! My breasts didn’t grow TOO much — maybe a cup, but as soon as they are empty, they’re back to regular size, so I didn’t need new bras.
Tanktops: I didn’t buy any tank tops. My trick — always wear a shelf-bra cami/tanktop with adjustable straps under ANYTHING. That way you can lift your over shirt, pull down your cami and fold over your bra - and Viola! Discreet nursing and accessable boob! I didn’t have to invest too much because I already wore a lot of those tanktops under my clothes. When my nipples are sore, I won’t even wear a bra– just the tanktop and that gives my chest a break.
Nursing Pads: The first two months I LIVED with nursing pads, after that, my milk regulated itself pretty well — I consider these a gotta-have-em.
Cape: As much as I wanted one of the trendy nursing covers, I never got around to buying one. When I’m at home, I don’t worry about covering myself up, and our blankets for baby are already trendy so if I do need to feed him where I need cover — I’ve got a source right there.
Lansinoh: They’ll most likely start you off with your first tube after delivery– and a little goes a long way. I’ve had mine for 5 months and it’s probably 1/4 gone, so I’m a little disappointed I nvested on an extra 2.
Pump: I really like the Ameda Purely Yours. When we were working on building a supply of milk, we used the Medela Milk Bags, but now we re-use glass frappuccino jars– they seem to work!
Diapers: I have to promote the bumGenius! They are oh-so adorable and the one-size ones really do grow with your baby. They’re more functional than disposables if you ask me. Just a cold wash/hot wash/cold rinse and you’ve got clean diapers. A little investment goes a long way.
High Chair : $50 portable - doesn’t take up space - Phil & Ted’s Meetoo. It has clamps that fasten right onto the the table. Only con– no tray.. but it brings them up to seating level which is nice. Problem: requires a table without a lip and with 4 legs.
Congratulations!!
