my best friend is having a baby in a couple weeks, and she is having a baby shower, what gifts can you get her when you have a budget. I don’t have a job, for I am too young. So there is no way I can make money.
Any ideas??
How about a "blow-out" kit? You can easily go to Dollar Tree (if you have one there, or a similar store) to purchase everything you need for it. And can keep it under $10!! Here’s a general list for it–
Tote size bag
Wet wipes
receiving blankets
Couple "shirts" ($ store usually has onsies or t-shirts for babies)
Diaper trash bags (or even the cat litter box liners–personally I preferred these as they covered up the baby poop smells)
Baby toy (great for distraction when making a diaper change)
Right there should be plenty and you’re still under $10 including any tax that may apply. The purpose is to keep the bag in the car. This way if they parent(s) is/are out then they can quickly grab the bag and have everything in there they need (provided they include a diaper of their own).
Another thing you could do to save money is join your local Yahoo Freecycle group and ask for used items (if you’re too young to have a job, I’m going to assume you’re under 18, so you may need a parent to sign up–I think they ask for your birthdate can’t remember offhand). Everything on there is free. You’d just need someone to go pick it up for you, and it’s all local (within your county). You could ask for baby clothes, blankets, crib sheets (trust me, the mom will love to have a good stack of these!), baby swing (another lovely item)…anything baby related! It’s great because it’s all free, and is usually in close to new condition!
Coupon books work great too! Filled with things such as babysitting for free, helping to clean, offer to cook a few meals, or tend to the baby while mom/dad works on things or naps.

Diapers and wipes are fairly cheap, especially if you go with store brands, and they will be appreciated. You could also offer babysitting services too if you’re tight on cash. Sometimes it’s nice for new parents to get out for a couple of hours on their own. Otherwise packs of onesies or sleepers(i.e. Gerber brand) are around $10 and Walmart has the Garanimals brand of clothing that are $3/piece and some are cute. You could also just get a gift card and put $10 or so on it.

How about making a "coupon" book that offers free babysitting, or your help with dinner. I know that this would be something that I would’ve loved to recieve at my baby shower. I am a single mom though so I don’t know if a married mother would feel the same way about this gift.

Make something. I had a friend who was on bed rest. I cut out patterns for infant clothing and she hand sewed them while in bed, so you don’t even need a sewing machine. You can get cool fabric even on clearance and you don’t even need a yard for a newborn dress (boy or girl, doesn’t matter). You can use either cloth or stretch knit. I personally prefer a kimono baby outfit because you don’t have to mess with buttons or snaps. Once the baby can move on their own, parents pretty much want stretchy stuff, so this is the chance to make something unique and useful!
I have links to a couple of patterns below, but your library will likely have a selection of books that will include free patterns for simple baby gowns (believe me, moms of newborns appreciate gowns - makes diaper changes easier).

This one requires either a backstitch or a herringbone stitch (if there is a lot of stretch).

This link is great; all use stretchy fabric and she even suggests using old T-shirt to get the softest fabric.

Offer to baby sit one night a month for the next 3 months.
Or prepare some home cooked meals that can be placed right in the oven and cooked with no prep time.
Offer to drive her to her appointments after the baby is born.

These bibs are cute and useful. They’re washable and it even has a food catcher.
