I got one of those little sewing machines that does embroidery by a computer program from my mother, and I have lots of fun monogramming stuff. Most of my son’s clothes have been monogrammed, the little pockets on his dress shirts, he fronts of his jon-jons and overalls, the hoods of his coat, etc. I think its cute, and will make a good keepsake for him, but my SIL tells me that it’s such a snobby thing to do and to not act rich when I’m not. Which is pretty rude to say about a baby outfit.
Is it snobby to monogram things? Not all of his things are, just some of them. All our wash clothes, table clothes and pillow cases are too, from me learning to use the machine.
katerina: That’s what I thought.
i think its pretty cute, especially when they’re young. and on the plus side when he goes to school at least he can’t get his coats mixed up with his friends or anything. besides i have to say if i got a new sewing machine that does embroidery then i’d be using it on everything, i mean how can you not play with it. don’t mind her.

How is monogramming snobby or rich?
Don’t worry about what she says…you enjoy your machine!

Not at all. Your SIL sounds spiteful. She doesn’t have the skill to do it, so she doesn’t want anyone else to either. There will always be people like that, who are rude because you have something or have an ability that they lack, so they seek to bring you back down to make themselves feel better.
I might just try monogramming some of my kids’ clothes. My machine can do it, but I’ve only used to embroidery feature to sew our last name into the backs of their clothes so that they don’t get mixed up at girl scout camp =P Monogramming is a nice, personal touch. It’s not snobby or ‘rich’. Hell, most of the kids of really rich people I know, prefer trashy, cheap clothes from American Eagle and Limited Too or whatever it’s called now, so the perception that rich kids run around with everything monogrammed is pretty far off base.

It’s not snobby at all. If you like to do it, then do so. Ignore the SIL.

If you’re doing it yourself on a machine that you’re messing around with then its fine to me.
Now if you really were one of those rich people that dont have anything else to to with their money, and paid someone to do it, then I see it being a little snobby.

If you like doing it i don’t think it is a big deal, personally i wouldn’t because i want to use those same clothes for our second child.
But whatever’s your hobby, it’s cool!

You do what you want to do and don’t fall into stereo types. If I had a machine, I would TAG everything my son owns. Daycares always loose everything!
