I would like to attempt a simple baby gift for a friend that is 7 mos, so it can’t take long, plus I’m a beginner…can’t even read patterns…. I make up stuff myself. maybe booties, a cap…. she doesn’t know the sex of the baby……. any ideas?
Maybe you could buy a small piece of cute fabric (unisex), cut it in the shape of a bib, and then sew on some cute crochet edging. Leave a chain tail at both edges in the back so she can tie a loose bow around her baby’s neck. Just a thought!

My favorite place for free crochet patterns is Bernat.com. They have really simple patterns classified by difficulty and they have a "learn to crochet" page too so you can learn to read patterns easily. And it’s all free! I learned by myself with that without even knowing how to crochet at all!

It’s never too late to learn to read patterns, You can learn to read them while following your first pattern. You wont regret taking the time to learn how to read patterns.
Go to your local dept. or craft store and buy a booklet, "Learn to Crochet", they are sold near the yarn. These small books only cost $3-4 and they show you pictures and have written instructions on how to do each stitch. Plus they have several simple beginner’s patterns in them.
Then you can go onto you tube and watch some video’s called "The art of Crochet" by TJW. She has made tutorial videos for many stitches, patterns, and misc items. You can watch and rewind it until you are caught up with her. Here is a link to the first video (crochet 101 Chain) you will need.

I always buy cheap fleece baby blankets and crochet an edging right onto it.
