I dont have a toddler, but I know many people with them! It ranges on what you can afford. Some get thousands (not litterally though!) which is ridiculous!
I think a large present and a few small presents is more than enough most toddlers break toys within 2 months of reciving them anyway. Perhaps save the money and buy things in sections instead! References :
I guess it would depend on their age. If they are old enough to have likes (like say they like elmo) buy them a couple of toys that they will probably enjoy. I would probably buy more of the things they need like clothes if they are younger…say 2 or 3 cuz they don’t really understand much about christmas at that age and don’t expect alot of toys. Plus, it’s very likely that most family members getting them gifts will probably get toys. References :

Not more than 5 for sure. I know my kids got tired of unwrapping after 2 or 3.
